A statement released by the hospital where he was undergoing treatment read, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in the morning on December 28th, 2023.” It is a sad day for the entire Tamil film and political fraternity.

Vijayakanth’s journey to stardom was marked by his successful career in cinema, where he appeared in 154 films, and his subsequent foray into politics. He founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party in 2005 and contested several elections. Though he never became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, he was a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape.

Vijayakanth was hospitalized on Tuesday for a regular health check-up, and at that time, the party had stated that he was ‘healthy’ and would be returning home after the tests. However, the news of his passing has left his fans and followers in a state of shock and disbelief. Megastar Chiranjeevi and other versatile actors expressed their grief.
